What is staple yarn and filament yarn?

What is staple yarn?

Staple yarn is yarn that consists of staple fibres. These are small fibres that can be measured in cm or inches. With the exception of silk, all natural fibres (such as wool, linen and cotton) are staple fibres.

You can also get synthetic staple fibres. Synthetic fibres such as polyester and acrylic are filament fibres . However, they can be cut into short staple fibres. This gives them a look and feel much closer to natural fibres.

Each staple fibre must be spun in order to make staple yarn.

Characteristics: Dull and flat appearance. They have a rough or fluffy feel.

What is filament yarn?

Filament yarn is yarn that consists of filament fibres. These are continuous fibres that can be measured in meters or yards.

Filament yarn can be made from synthetic fibres. It can also be made from silk, which is reeled from cocoons. The fibres are twisted or grouped together to form a yarn.

Special feature: Shiny, smooth and durable.
